Philosophy: This is a quote from Edward Weston, “The camera should be used for a recording of life, for rendering the very substance and quintessence of the thing itself, whether it be polished steel or palpitating flesh.” Edward believed in taking photographs of life. Edward liked to take his photos by adjusting the lens to f/64. He believed in “straight photography.” Edward considered himself to be a “realist” which he is because in a lot of his famous works he showcases people.
Influences:When Edward had a Tropica Studio he met a photographer named Margrethe Mather, Edward called her “the first important woman in my life” he said this because she was frequently in his photographs. When Edward opened his Tropica Studio he took inspiration from John Singer Sargent's paintings. On his 16th birthday his father. Edward did portraits up until his early thirties in which he was inspired by cubism because he saw taking portraits as a dead end for him. Compare and Contrast:
"Lone Pepper" -Jesus S.
"Pepper"- Edward Weston
What caught my attention about this photo of a pepper was because I liked how the pepper looks in the dark, it seems to be in a barely lit room. It was pretty easy to get this photo done because I already had pepper. Since I couldn’t get the shading like Edward did in his photo I edited the background.
"Core Connection" Jesus S.
"Bananas" Edward Weston
This photo was easy to recreate because I already had bananas. To get a similar angle of how the bananas were placed I had to stack some on top of each other. I didn’t have the exact quantity but it seemed like enough. In order for the photo to be seen better I edited it in photoshop by making it brighter.
"Twins" Jesus S.
"Emulation 2" Edward Weston
In my opinion this was my best photo because it's the one that looks the most alike. This photo caught my attention because I knew that I had the materials for it. I used a bedside table and a slight lit dark blue room.
Artist Statement I really liked Edwards photos because he had a wide selection of pictures to choose from for a recreation. I liked that Edward saw life as very important. When recreating my selection of Edward's photos "Pepper" was the hardest because it needed the most editing. A unique thing about Edwards photographs was that he liked to take most of them in the f. 34 lens. I liked that although his photos weren't much they still succeeded.
